Using your phone as a modem
If you want to use your phone as a modem (that is, to send and receive data over a data network such as the Internet), you need modem drivers installed on your PC. Most modem drivers are installed automatically when Nokia PC Suite is installed and you connect your phone to the PC in the Get Connected wizard.
Note:
If you only want to use the Nokia PC Suite applications, but not to access the data network such as the Internet with your phone, you do not need modem drivers on your PC.
Modem drivers for a cable connection
Modem drivers for the supported USB and serial cables are installed automatically.
Modem drivers for a Bluetooth wireless technology connection
A standard Bluetooth modem is installed on your PC if you have a supported Bluetooth stack installed on your PC, or if you use Windows XP SP2 Bluetooth. To check if you have a standard Bluetooth modem installed, go to Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems. If no Bluetooth modem is visible, you have to install a Bluetooth stack that is supported by Nokia PC Suite, or configure your MS Windows XP SP2 Bluetooth.
Modem drivers for an infrared connection
Nokia infrared modem is installed automatically when you connect your phone to the PC via infrared. If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 1, you must update the Nokia IrDA driver.
To update the infrared driver for Windows XP Service Pack 1
Connect your phone to a compatible PC using IrDA.
Open Control Panel and select Phone and Modem Options.
In Phone and Modem Options select the Modems tab. In the Modems tab, select Standard Modem over IR link, and click Properties.
In the Standard Modem over IR link Properties dialog box select the Driver tab, and select Update Driver.
Hardware Update Wizard opens. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced). Click Next.
The next dialog asks you to choose your search and installation options. Select Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install. Click Next.
Clear the check box Show compatible hardware.
In the Manufacturer list, select Nokia. In the Models list, select the modem you want to add. Click Next.
Click Yes in the Update Driver Warning if you want to proceed with the update.
The Nokia xxxx IrDA modem (where xxxx stands for the four-digit model number of the phone) can now be seen in the Installed Nokia Modems list in the Nokia Modem Options Control Panel applet.
Using your phone as a modem
You can use your phone with a variety of commercially available data communications applications. When configuring a data application, you must select your phone as the modem. You can select either Nokia xxxx Cable, Nokia xxxx USB, Nokia xxxx Bluetooth, or Nokia xxxx IrDA as the modem (xxxx stands for the model number of the phone), depending on the phone you are using and the modems you have installed.
Before you use your phone as a modem, you must have the following:
appropriate data communications software installed on your PC.
a subscription to the appropriate network services from your home service provider or Internet service provider.
the appropriate modem drivers installed on your PC.
To use your phone as a modem
Connect your phone to the PC.
Depending on what connection type you want to use and what your phone and PC support, you should
activate the IR port of your phone. Place the phone and the PC so that the IR ports of the two devices point at each other. Depending on the phone model you are using, you may also have to enable modem usage of the IR port on your phone. See the user's guide of your phone for more detailed information.
connect the cable to the PC first and then connect the other end of the cable to the phone.
activate the Bluetooth wireless technology connection of your phone and pair your phone with the PC using Get Connected if you are using Microsoft Windows XP Bluetooth. When using other Bluetooth stacks, you have to use the stack’s own pairing wizard.
If you have been using your phone with other Nokia PC Suite applications, disable all connection types from Nokia Connection Manager.
Create the data connection with the connection program of the PC (for example "Network and Dial-up Connection” in Windows 2000 and “Network Connection” in XP).
Select the modem you want to use according to the instructions of the connection program, and make the data call.
When you want to continue using other Nokia PC Suite applications, end the data call, and select the connection types you want to use in the Nokia Connection Manager again.
Note:
If your phone supports packet data, you can use One Touch Access in Nokia PC Suite to connect to the Internet. Connect your phone to the PC and One Touch Access automatically uses it as a modem when establishing an Internet connection. For more information, see the section One Touch Access.
Bluetooth connection
You can use Bluetooth wireless technology to connect a mobile phone with Bluetooth connectivity to a compatible PC. If Get Connected lists Bluetooth in the connection types, you have a PC with Bluetooth connectivity, that is, with appropriate Bluetooth wireless technology software installed. In addition, your PC needs to have a Bluetooth adapter plugged in.
Get Connected supports the Bluetooth stacks that are listed in System requirements. To check which Bluetooth stack has been installed on your PC, go to the Nokia PC Suite main window and click Help > About Nokia PC Suite... > System info... If the Bluetooth stacks found on your PC are not supported by Get Connected, this is mentioned in the system info.
Not all phone models support Bluetooth. Please refer to your phone's user's guide for more information on availability and activation.
When connecting via Bluetooth wireless technology, the phone and PC must be within a 10 metre radius of each other (about 30 feet).
To connect a phone to a PC via Bluetooth wireless technology
Activate the Bluetooth wireless technology connection on your phone and make sure that you have made your phone visible in the phone's Bluetooth settings. When you activate Bluetooth for the first time, you are asked to give a name to your phone. This name will be used whenever you pair your phone and the PC and it can also been seen by other Bluetooth device users.
